Background of the Study:
Ancient fishing techniques in Andoni provide critical insights into the subsistence strategies and technological innovations of coastal communities. Archaeological evidence such as fish traps, bone fish hooks, and processing areas reveal sophisticated methods of aquatic resource exploitation (Ifeanyi, 2023). These techniques not only underscore the community’s adaptability to aquatic environments but also illustrate complex social and economic interactions centered on fishing practices (Obi, 2024). Advances in experimental archaeology and residue analysis have allowed researchers to reconstruct ancient fishing methodologies, linking them to broader trade and cultural exchange networks (Chidera, 2025). Furthermore, local oral histories corroborate these findings by preserving detailed accounts of fishing rituals and seasonal practices. This research integrates material analyses with ethnographic data to present a comprehensive view of ancient fishing practices in Andoni, thereby enriching our understanding of maritime adaptations and their influence on cultural development (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
While archaeological evidence of ancient fishing techniques exists in Andoni, its systematic analysis remains sparse. Limited integration of experimental and ethnographic methodologies has led to partial reconstructions of these practices. Consequently, the role of fishing in shaping social organization and economic development is not fully understood. Addressing these gaps is essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of ancient maritime strategies and their cultural implications (Obi, 2024; Chidera, 2025).

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it offers a detailed examination of ancient fishing techniques, linking archaeological evidence with cultural practices. The outcomes will enrich maritime archaeological research and support the preservation of traditional fishing heritage (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the appraisal of archaeological evidence of ancient fishing techniques in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, utilizing excavation data, experimental reconstructions, and ethnographic interviews. Limitations include preservation issues and incomplete artifact recovery.
